According to the Census Bureau, 47 million people spoke a foreign language at home in the year 2000. And many of these are young people. In fact, currently about 20% of births are to a foreign mother (up from just 6% in 1970). While Latin and South America account for the majority of the immigrant population, over 40% are from Asia and Europe and there are a growing number of immigrants from Africa. The materials available in our libraries should reflect this diversity in our community. Our dual-language books are offered in English and up to 40 languages. All of our dual-language books are written in English and a foreign language, with over 40 languages represented. The options for your patrons are greater with a dual-language text than with a single-language text. The stories and illustrations are so fantastic that readers may choose to use them for multiple purposes.
CDs of many of the stories are available in numerous languages, so the books can be enjoyed and used as a teaching resource even if the reader (or parent) does not speak the foreign language. With the CDs, children can also gain an exposure to less commonly taught languages and cultures, developing an interest in future language study. Help develop children who understand and are tolerant of other cultures! It is our responsibility to raise culturally aware children who can bring our communities closer together. These dual-language products, with multi-ethnic characters and themes, teach a tolerance and respect for others. They also provide a fun way to help kids learn about other cultures and traditions. Offer unique story-time activities and presentations to
inspire kids! We currently are developing presentations for children ages 2-12 intended to expose them to other languages and cultures and to get them interested in learning foreign languages. These will initially be offered only in limited parts of the country.
