Language Lizard Update

Language Lizard Update

Dear Reader:

Spring is finally here! As we hunkered down during this long, cold winter, we reviewed customer feedback to see what else we could do to meet the needs of our busy customers and the language learners they support.

Two time-saving services we have introduced recently are our popular Language Book Sets and our new Personal Shopper Service. The Language Book Sets, which we began offering in the fall, allow customers to select one product item and receive 5 or 10 of our most popular books in a particular language.  With our free Personal Shopper Service, we help customers who have limited time to navigate our site, and who may require books in multiple languages.

We continue to post articles on our blog with topics designed to support educators who work with Dual-Language Learners.  Our most recent article Time to Celebrate your Dual Language Learners! provides great ideas for celebrating the achievements of bilingual and multilingual students. See below for links to some of our other blog posts.

Happy Reading!

P.S. We now have books in Tigrinya, a language spoken by people living in and emigrating from Ethiopia and Eritrea. This is in addition to books in Dutch, Latvian, Malay, Norwegian and Swedish, newly offered late last year.

Review by Maureen Barlow Pugh

Li is in the same predicament my son has been in all last week. You know how it is - your child’s tooth gets wiggly, and then wobbly, and you wait and wait and it feels like it will never come out! Monday comes and goes, Tuesday Li shows his whole class, Wednesday he has to be careful eating, Thursday it still isn’t out, until thank goodness, Friday comes and with it, a tooth!

All Li’s friends are happy to share their traditions for what they do with their lost teeth. One boy tells Li about the tooth fairy, another about burying his in the ground so that a new one can grow (in his mouth, of course). Yet another friend throws hers in the river for good luck. But Li waits to hear what Grandma has to say about the matter. He follows her advice, makes a wish, and is so pleased when his wish comes true.

This book addresses an event that all children experience and often remember: the loss of their first tooth. It makes a happy celebration of something that can be disconcerting for kids. The beautiful watercolor illustrations show a diverse mix of children, mostly playing and smiling, and Mom, Dad, and Grandma, too.

At the end, there is a bonus “Toothy Questions” questionnaire, which asks questions about topics such as how to care for your teeth, and what different cultures use to clean their teeth. It’s a great opportunity to discuss dental hygiene with your child in an age-appropriate manner.

In English with: Albanian, Bengali, Chinese-Traditional, Czech, English only, Farsi, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Panjabi, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Tamil, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
