Feathers and Friends is a beautifully illustrated tale about two children, Sami from Afghanistan and Rosa from Ecuador, who form a friendship through their love of nature and creative arts. He likes to draw and she likes to write. Together, the new friends embark on a bird-watching adventure to create a book about all the birds they see.


Feathers and Friends is available in English-only and many bilingual editions and includes teacher resources and English audio. This book is part of the Language Lizard Living in Harmony collection which helps explain concepts of diversity, kindness, and friendship.

Con coloridas ilustraciones la historia no presenta a Sami, originario de Afganistán, que acaba de mudarse a Seattle y le encanta dibujar. Mientras dibujaba en el pavimento una enorme ave, conoce a Rosa, quien le encanta escribir y vive en Ecuador. Los dos descubren que comparten un interés por las aves y, juntos, se embarcan en un proyecto para crear un libro sobre todas las aves que ven durante su excursión.
Este libro, bilingüe en inglés y español, forma parte de la colección Language Lizard Living in Harmony, que ayuda a explicar conceptos como la diversidad, la amabilidad y la amistad. Excelente libro para los programas de ESOL.

Feathers and Friends is a bilingual book written by Diane Costa and illustrated by Joyeeta Neogi. It is a simple story told from the perspective of two children from different backgrounds. It is through nature that they are able to cultivate their friendship. They enjoy watching, writing, and drawing birds. Comparing the backyard birds in their respective homelands to where they now reside allows them to assimilate to their surroundings. Finding friendship through a common hobby gives way to a new story that they are both creating in their new home together.

In this story, two divergent children connect over their shared interest in birds.  The realistic illustrations in Feathers and Friends beautifully match the author’s words.  This easy-reading nonfiction title is one that many children could relate to.  This title is also available in Spanish.
