Reviewer: Mary Karen Engel from St. Louis, Mo
I am very thoughtful in the choices I make for my classroom library. I want all my students to learn about others and to recognize themselves in the characters of our books. These illustrations are fantastic. Children will see characters in  all different settings experiencing the same things and learning the idioms used to describe them. Very clear definitions and examples that are quite helpful to a student learning English and all  children.

4 of 5 Great resource for all January 29, 2021
Reviewer: Danielle Hammelef from Michigan
As someone who has personally been asked by my Japanese friends what some English idioms mean, I see this book as a great help to explain in both text and bright illustrations the meaning behind the phrases. I smiled at some of the humor in both text and art and enjoyed seeing many different cultures represented in the book.

Some of the examples relied more on the visuals to explain the idioms and a few had examples I wished had been stronger. This book has links for English audio of the text, lesson plans for teachers and parents, more food idioms to understand, as well as translations in other languages. Overall, this book and the resources provided are highly recommended for everyone, even those who are native English speakers. Idioms are not always easily understandable in context for everyone and this book will generate more conversations about how these phrases can be used personally.

5 of 5 Icing On The Cake is a treasure! January 25, 2021
Reviewer: Jandy R., Early Childhood Educator from SPED & Bilingual Professional Development
I’m so thrilled that Multicultural Children Book Day (multiculturalchildrensbookday.com) has given me the opportunity to do a formal review on Children books. And even more so to have been matched with a book that will be of significant help for bilingual children as well as those who have been diagnosed with Autism.

Can you imagine how difficult it is for English Language Learners to hear words that they know the meaning of, but still do not understand? And how confusing it is for a child with Autism whose absence of pragmatic language makes them understand everything literally? When children are faced with language barriers, it affects their participation in school, as well as their social life development. Not grasping what everybody else is understanding, affects their self-esteem and their confidence.

“Icing on the cake” by Troon Harrison, is a book about Idioms that refers to food, phrases that literally say one thing, but they mean something completely different. Phrases that are commonly used in the everyday English language. For example: “Two peas in a pod” meaning two people who are very similar. This book is the perfect idiom “Dictionary” for this audience.  The book is not limited to Spanish Bilingual children, you can also find it in English-only editions, as well as in 9 other different languages. ( Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, French, Haitian Creole, Hmong, Telugu, and Vietnamese.)

This book also contains very vivid illustrations by Joyeeta Neogi, and I must mention there is an evident effort in representing a variety of cultures and diversity throughout the pages. Language Lizard (languagelizard.com) is the company behind the book. It is a woman owned small business on a mission to provide resources that will help teachers create culturally responsive classrooms, where students of all backgrounds feel welcome, respected and
included.

“Icing on the cake” is a treasure in the bookshelf, every Bilingual, ELL and Special Education teacher must have one available, as well as the parents to those children who fall into these groups.

5 of 5 Icing On The Cake - great for children of all ages December 7, 2020
Reviewer: Jillian N.
I read this book aloud to my three daughters -- ages 9, 12 and 17 -- and each of them learned new idioms! The girls had lots of fun guessing what the idioms meant before I read the definitions aloud. The artwork is beautiful as well as sophisticated making the book of interest to children of ALL ages. I can't wait to read the other books in the series to my girls.
